Artist Susanna Gabbiano envisioned a small baroque orchestra with an edge for her "Popera" project. We decided on Strings, French Horns, Oboe, Flute, Orch. Percussion, and Rhythm section with both nylon string and electric guitars. The arrangements are lyrical and romantic, but can break into a heavier rock feel in an instant. The scores required the musicians to play with sensitivity and range in some difficult keys. All voices are quite exposed, and there is nowhere to hide. Great performances by all!

Romantic Motown Medley - Part 1 - Excerpt
- produced in 2010
Susanna Gabbiano, Ray Allaire & Jimmy Castor - recorded at Son Songs Studios, Las Vegas, NV by T- Bone Demman and at UNLV Studios by Chuck Foley
Susanna needed some quality pop material for her "Incarnation Of Love" CD , so we mined these gems from the Motown catalog. We chose Ray Allaire and Pop / Funk Icon Jimmy Castor to duet with Susanna on these classics. The "Baroque Orchestra" sound is a departure from the standard treatment on these songs.
The rhythm section definitely led the way on this medley. We wanted to depart from the standard Motown treatment & soften the vibe to a more romantic orchestrated feel. The arrangement is written with segues between songs for live performance. These transitions were handled nicely by the orchestral musicians. Ron Crews'  thoughtful latin percussion, bells and vibes really brings life to this cut.

Susanna Gabbiano & Ray Allaire - recorded at Son Songs Studios, Las Vegas, NV by T- Bone Demman and at UNLV Studios by Chuck Foley
Susanna wanted an Italian Popera duet for her project and this song fit the bill nicely. The arrangement starts in 4 sharps and modulates three times. A great example of how the musicians need to accomadate the optimal range of the vocalists. Susanna and Ray both worked hard on language, style and pronunciation to capture this genre, and turned in great performances.
Nice work by Strings, Woodwinds and French Horns on this chart. The keys and ranges left them all very exposed - not a lot of notes, but difficult intonation and phrasing. The score seemed simple until we played it!
Fields Of Gold - produced in 2010

Susanna loves this song! - so we did our best to come up with a fresh take on what is now a contemporary classic.
The arrangement is meant as a live show opener. The full  cut features all sections of the orchestra as the song progresses. Susanna takes it down to voice, reeds, and celli,  before rising to a big fanfare ending. Intended to be exciting visually as well as musically.
This arrangement was actually recorded in three seperate sections - intro , body and outro ( see entire cut). The challenge was to conduct the orchestral musicians after the fact , while we all listened to rhythm section guide mix in the headphones.  T-Bone Demman did a nice  job putting the sections together in post. Drummer Brian Czach was definitely "driving the bus" on this cut!

Jimmy Castor lends his considerable talent to this section. Both singers settle right into the pocket provided by Fr.Horn and Woodwind counter-melody. Again, a light pop orchestral treatment.

Susanna Gabbiano, Ray Allaire & Jimmy Castor - Recorded at Son Songs Studios - Las vegas, NV by T-Bone Demman and at UNLV Studios by Chuck Foley
This segment is structured to bring together all 3 singers in the finale. I wove the melodies from prior songs in for an interesting effect.  Engineer T-Bone Demman placed Susanna center-stage, with Jimmy and Ray on either side of her in the stereo mix. The goal is to have the listener visualize their positions on stage in a live performance.
Susanna Gabbiano , Jimmy Castor, and Ray Allaire - three distinct voices all  working together -  accompanied by a talented orchestra. For the producer / arranger, it was a real honor to work with all these folks and make some good music.
